BIG GUN PJ2T

primeira Big gun que trabalhei em Cw. A alguns anos atras.

PJ2T, located at our club's permanent QTH called "Signal Point," is situated on half an acre of oceanfront property within the grounds of what used to be called the Coral Cliff Hotel, formerly owned by PJ9EE, Mr. Chet Brandon. This was the site of the famous Radioteam Finland PJ9W contest operations in 1990. The QTH was previously owned by W1BIH, and has played host to winning contest operations since 1968.

With towers of 100, 80, and 54 feet, stacked monobanders on 10, multiple long-boom monoband yagis on 15 and 20, a 40 yagi at 107 feet, and a hilltop European tribander, PJ2T can split power and simultaneously beam toward Europe and the U.S. for contest operation. Wire beams, Beverage antennas, flags, and an RX four square serve on the low bands, and indoors are four fully equipped stations with desktop computers, Writelog, an Ethernet LAN, and DSL Internet connectivity. The station is located on the southwest coast in the "sticks" about 45 minutes from town, so it's an electrically quiet location, good for hamming and so dark that the stars are incredible.

Our "CCC" contesting club is a group of 20 guys who pool our resources to maintain and constantly improve the station, and we contest under the PJ2T callsign whenever we can get enough operators to go to Curacao. We've learned in our ten years of operation there that by far the biggest challenge is dealing with the oceanside tropical climate, where the salt eats almost all forms of metal, and the heat and humidity take out computers, linears, and amps mercilessly. We had to rebuild almost all of the antennas in 2006-07 and believe now that we have perfected our salt-proofing techniques. In addition, we scrape and repaint the two Rohn steel towers top to bottom nearly every six months with epoxy paint. Inside, we've found by trial and error that FT-1000s and FT-2000s survive the extreme heat and humidity better than anything else on the market and vintage Compaq Windows 98 PCs, except for their power supplies, hold up the best.

We've posted quite a few World # 1 wins in ARRL DX, CQWW, and WPX contests, as well as in 10 meter and 160 events. Our members are overwhelmingly CW types, but our contest wins are evenly distributed across both phone and CW. The statisticians tell us that PJ2T has been the most-logged callsign in all of ham radio for the past seven years. We aren't the biggest, best, or loudest contest station on the DX side, but we're ALWAYS on in all of the major contests.

Propagation from Curacao is almost magical. Located at 12 degrees north latitude, within the well-documented "equatorial anomaly" of 10 to 15 degrees above the equator, this is one of the best contesting locations in the world, especially for the ARRL DX contests.

Curacao has an advanced infrastructure with good roads, reliable power, safe tap water, top notch medical care, great shopping, reasonable prices, broad availability of goods in stores, high speed Internet and digital TV connectivity almost everywhere, and 130,000 incredibly friendly, intelligent, and welcoming people. Nearly everybody speaks at least three languages, the University of the Netherlands Antilles offers many advanced technical degree programs, we have a large and mature commercial seaport and drydock, and the longest airport runway in the Caribbean at 11,500 feet. American Airlines serves Curacao with two non-stop 737s daily to Miami, and there's daily non-stop air service to Europe and to many other destinations within the region.

If you would like to hear about becoming a CCC member, or would like to visit the QTH as part of a PJ2T contest team member, please contact me at ghoward@kent.edu.

When the CCC club is not using the QTH it is available for your use. See http://www.pj2t.org for more information or E-mail me, Geoff Howard, W0CG/7, ghoward@kent.edu. I serve as rental coordinator for CCC.

What's up in space

Metallic pictures of the Sun

QUIET NO MORE: The recent spell of low solar activity is over. Sunspots are popping up across the solar disk and one of them, growing sunspot 1226, is crackling with C- and M-class solar flares. So far none of the blasts has been geoeffective, but this could change as the active region turns toward Earth in the days ahead. Stay tuned.

GEOMAGNETIC STORMS: A stream of high-speed solar wind is buffeting Earth's magnetic field, causing geomagnetic storms around both of our planet's poles. At this time of year, the midnight sun interferes with the visibility of Northern Lights over Alaska and Scandinavia, but the situation is different on the other side of Earth. Southern Lights were on full display this morning in the dark autumn skies of Queenstown, New Zealand:

"I actually missed the most intense part of the display," says photographer Minoru Yoneto. But as this 30-second exposure shows, "better late than never!"

High-latitude sky watchers should remain alert for auroras as the solar wind continues to blow. NOAA forecasters estimate a 20% - 25% chance of geomagnetic storms in the next 24 hours. Aurora alerts: text, voice.

WARP SPEED! Space shuttle Endeavour and the International Space Station are making a series of bright flybys over North America and Europe this weekend. In Arizona, Mike Weasner pointed his 8-inch telescope at the docked spacecraft and this is what he saw:

"I attempted to video record the ISS and Endeavour, but my tracking was not very good, and most of the time the spacecraft were not in the camera's field of view," says Weasner. "However, this allowed me to record a little-known space station capability: One frame showed the ISS going to Warp Speed!"

"Of course, the effect is a result of motion blurring during the video exposure," he allows, "but it does make for an interesting photo."

This is space shuttle Endeavour's final flight, and the nights ahead offer a last chance to see the shuttle before it returns to Earth for retirement. Check the Simple Satellite Tracker or your cell phone for local flyby times.

Radioamadorismo no Brasil

Radioamadorismo no Brasil

The CQ Amateur Radio Hall of Fame was established in January 2001 to recognize individuals - radio amateurs or not - who significantly affected the course of Amateur Radio, as well as radio amateurs who have made significant contributions either to amateur radio, to their professional careers or to some other aspect of life on our planet. This year's inductees are: Nate Brightman (K6OSC), Robert Schmieder (KK6EK), E. King Stodola (W2AXO, SK), Bob Gunderson (W2JIO, SK), Dave Bell (W6AQ), Cardinal Roger Mahony, Archbishop Emeritus of Los Angeles (W6QYI), Ron Moorefield (W8ILC), Loretta Ensor (W9UA, SK), Malcolm Raff (WA2UNP, SK), Allen Taflove (WA9JLV), Sylvia Margolis (SK) and Ted McElroy (SK). IOTA: RULE CHANGES - With the publication this month of the new IOTA Directory a number of rule changes have come into force including the raising of the minimum QSO threshold from 200 to 1000 QSOs for first-time activated new IOTA groups and amendment of the handling of islands previously deleted following a deletion of a DXCC entity, allowing acceptance of old Penguin Islands and Red Sea Islands QSOs for AF-070 and AS-009 respectively. DIA DO TELEGRAFISTA

Dayton Hamvention 2011

On behalf of all the members of the Dayton Amateur Radio Association we are pleased to welcome you to Hamvention 2011! Many volunteers have been working very hard for the last year to produce this amazing event. Hamvention requires hundreds of volunteers from around the world all working harmoniously so our guests have as memorable and pleasurable experience as possible. I hope you will join me in thanking these volunteers for their dedicated participation.

It seems as if world events continue to bring forth both major political and geographical upheavals affecting millions of people throughout the world. Amateur radio could not be more relevant or needed than at the present moment. At the heart of these political uprisings and natural disasters are the amateur radio operators who tirelessly hold open the communication lifeline to the outside world. I heard news accounts that during the crisis in the Middle East the internet was shut down for periods and the only communication available was through Amateur Radio.

The theme for Hamvention this year is Global Friendship. Amateur Radio has the unique opportunity to promote friendships not only between countries but between ourselves! Now is the best of times to promote and recruit new members to the hobby. While you are here take the time to make a new friend; promote Global Friendship through Amateur Radio. Thanks again for making the journey here and celebrating Amateur Radio. We wish you all an enjoyable Hamvention!

• I am subject to certain procedures at the military base, sometimes I have to leave the radio for awhile, but I always return the last QRG for CQ.
• I have been inclusive, to aid in computer communications staff.
• Remembering that I am not military, but I'm at their house and I must respect therefore urge cooperation.
• Today there are about 70 researchers and military off the island back to the mainland, I've been called on military helicopters to instructions that are returning.
• In the afternoon I'll be talking to the new commander for the installation of Delta and G5RV. The linear still could not diagnose the problem, but I'm having good demand in 15m even with only 100w.

PY2ZA - Jr. ( PP0T )
